My interest in English was established at secondary school. Taking a keen interest in the written word and how language is used for different purposes, I studied A Level English Language and went on to graduate from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Linguistics.
In 2013, I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln, and began my teaching career, teaching at a local secondary school from year 7 up to A Level.
After eight, successful years in the classroom and becoming a mum to two brilliant (but relentless!) boys, I made the decision to leave the classroom environment and pursue my love of tutoring and my interest in child and adolescent wellbeing.
I have tutored privately for several years and therefore have extensive experience as both a teacher and a tutor. I have sound knowledge of the National Curriculum at upper KS2, KS3 and GCSE (both Language and Literature) and have taught up to A Level English.
Since 2016, I have been an examiner for WJEC and AQA, for both English Language and English Literature GCSE exams. Consequently, I am familiar with a variety of GCSE exam specifications and have had access to additional training through the exam boards. This allows me to support learners to achieve their GCSE goals by advising on the key elements examiners look out for and how they can most easily and effectively boost their grade.
It’s important to me to establish a secure, working relationship with each learner so they feel confident to make mistakes and explore areas that they find difficult so they can get the very best experience from private tuition. I therefore offer a free 20 minute phone or video call prior to the first sessions to get to know the student and find out a little about them so I can make learning engaging and specific to their interests. I try to make sessions engaging and interactive by using games with younger students or drawing upon current issues and topics with older students.
Whether your child excels at English and would like help to achieve that elusive grade 9, or simply needs a little more support with reading or writing skills, feel free to get in touch for an informal chat to see what we can offer.
