About me

Christina FawnMy interest in English was established at secondary school. Taking a keen interest in the written word and how language is used for different purposes, I studied A Level English Language and went on to graduate from York University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language and Linguistics.

In 2013, I completed my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln, and began my teaching career, teaching at a local secondary school from year 7 up to A Level.

After eight, successful years in the classroom and becoming a mum to two brilliant (but relentless!) boys, I made the decision to leave the classroom environment and pursue my love of tutoring and my interest in child and adolescent wellbeing.

I have tutored privately for several years and therefore have extensive experience as both a teacher and a tutor. I have sound knowledge of the National Curriculum at upper KS2, KS3 and GCSE (both Language and Literature) and have taught up to A Level English.

Since 2016, I have been an examiner for WJEC and AQA, for both English Language and English Literature GCSE exams. Consequently, I am familiar with a variety of GCSE exam specifications and have had access to additional training through the exam boards. This allows me to support learners to achieve their GCSE goals by advising on the key elements examiners look out for and how they can most easily and effectively boost their grade.

It’s important to me to establish a secure, working relationship with each learner so they feel confident to make mistakes and explore areas that they find difficult so they can get the very best experience from private tuition. I therefore offer a free 20 minute phone or video call prior to the first sessions to get to know the student and find out a little about them so I can make learning engaging and specific to their interests. I try to make sessions engaging and interactive by using games with younger students or drawing upon current issues and topics with older students.

Whether your child excels at English and would like help to achieve that elusive grade 9, or simply needs a little more support with reading or writing skills, feel free to get in touch for an informal chat to see what we can offer.

One to one tuition

Image of girl using computerAccording to Education Endowment Foundation, ‘one to one tuition can be effective, delivering approximately five additional months’ progress on average’. It is most effective when linked with classroom learning, therefore a free, 20 minute telephone or video call will be arranged before the student’s first session in order get to know you and discuss the specific areas your child needs support with. If possible, I will also ask for feedback from any recent reports or assessments they have received so I can tailor tuition to the student as far as possible.

I believe that tuition is at its most effective when there is collaboration between the classroom teacher and the tutor. Whilst this is not mandatory, I always encourage parents or students to let their teacher know they are working with a private tutor so progress can be monitored via the tutor and school, in order to get the most out of the sessions.

Prior to the first session, I will request a copy of a recent assessment in reading and writing (I can provide these for the student to complete if you have none available) in order to make my own assessment of the student’s current knowledge and ability, in order to inform my teaching. As a private tutor, I understand that most parents or students seek private tuition for a specific reason and I am therefore happy to be guided by you and your requirements. In some cases, I will make recommendations using my own professional judgement if I feel there are areas that need addressing

Group tuition

Tuition of 5 students

Group tuition is a great way to spread the cost if one or more individuals are interested in private tuition and the evidence base suggests that it can be as effective as one to one tuition (Education Endowment Foundation). Group tuition can run with a group of between three and five students per session at a reduced rate.

With all group tuition, I offer a free, 20 minute consultation with the whole group to discuss which topics the students would like to work on collaboratively and work out a schedule of lessons suitable to all.

Group tuition is offered on a limited basis so please get in touch to find out more.

Over the holiday periods, I offer ‘Booster Sessions’ in the run up to mock or re-sit exams, KS2 SATs and general ‘Catch up’ sessions for students who feel they might need a little extra support around the crucial times. These sessions are advertised in the run up to the holiday periods with prescribed topics for the students to choose from. Please contact me to register your interest or request further information.
